LibriVox recording of The Crisis: A Record of the Darker Races, Vol. I, No. 5 by W. E. B. Du Bois. Read in English by LibriVox Volunteers. The Crisis is the official publication of the NAACP first published in 1910 with W. E. B. Du Bois, one of the founders, as editor. He exercised almost total control of the content and opinions of the publication until he resigned in 1934. Du Bois was one of the most ardent advocates for total civil rights for all racial minorities and was a prolific author for the cause. From Du Bois’ editorial: “The object of this publication is to set forth those facts and arguments which show the danger of race prejudice, particularly as manifested to-day toward colored people. It takes its name from the fact that the editors believe that this is a critical time in the history of the advancement of men.” This issue has editorials, opinions, and articles such as "The Blair BIll," "The Methodist Church North," and "Abraham Grant." There is a special poem, "Ballade de Belles Milatraisses" by Rosalie Jonas. (Summary by Larry Wilson) For further information, including links to online text, reader information, RSS feeds, CD cover or other formats (if available), please go to the LibriVox catalog page for this recording.

LibriVox recording of Biography of an American Bondman, By His Daughter by Josephine Brown. Read in English by Jim Locke Josephine Brown's Biography of an American Bondsman faithfully follows the trajectory of her father's life as previously explored in his own narratives. She distills and summarizes the major revelatory moments of his autobiography while she also incorporates new anecdotal information and offers her own perspective on Brown's life. Whereas her biography draws frequently from previously published autobiographical accounts, the narrative style and comic flourishes add interest and value to the text. Andrews observes that her biography's primary contribution to the "lore of William Wells Brown" may be the insight it offers into the rhetorical tactics used by both father and daughter in "their war of words against slavery." In 1969 a police raid on the Stonewall Inn , ( a gay bar on Christopher Street ) started a three day riot. This was said to be the start of the modern lesbian, gay civil rights movement. The film is made up of excerpts or speeches, and performances from the 1989 Central Park Rally, the 1990 Union Sq. Rally, and the Parades on Fifth Avenue in the years surronding that time.
